Kemenpora collaborates with the Indonesian NPC to run disability sports classification training
The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora RI) together with the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPC Indonesia) held a national-level training on disability sports classification for the physical disability category in Solo for four days, starting on Tuesday 19 May 2026. The training is conducted as an effort to improve effectiveness in scouting potential athletes. There are 45 participants from 17 provinces with backgrounds as physiotherapists or doctors specializing in rehabilitation. Over the four days, participants received various materials related to the classification process for prospective athletes with physical disabilities. One of the speakers is Dr. Retno Setianing, Sp.KFR (K), who has long experience assisting NPC Indonesia in developing disability sports. “Based on my experience, sometimes athletes who have been trained and nurtured to the maximum do not meet the criteria when subjected to classification. It’s a pity for the training and funding process if the athlete already feels included, but when brought to classification they do not qualify,” Retno Setianing said on Wednesday (20/5/26). She considers this training important so that Indonesia can have competent individuals to conduct classifications of prospective disability athletes. According to Retno, the presence of classifiers can increase effectiveness in detecting or nurturing potential athletes. “We indeed must increase the number of classifiers, especially physical disability classifiers, so that later if there are people with disabilities who are interested in sports and competitive sport, the trained participants can conduct the assessments and ensure these prospective athletes meet the criteria,” she added. During the training, participants were also taken to the Indonesian Paralympic Training Centre (PPPI) in Delingan, Karanganyar Regency, to observe training processes and practice classification in several sports. “After that process, there is an examination as this is a serious process with regional responsibilities. They must pass first that they are fit to be a classifier,” Retno explained. The NPC Indonesia Deputy Secretary General (Wasekjen), Rima Ferdianto, explained that the Solo training is the first stage, with participants from western Indonesia covering Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan. After this, the training will focus on eastern Indonesia. “We hope that in the third quarter the national disability physical classification training can be held for regions that have not yet participated. Eastern Indonesia might participate around September,” said Rima Ferdianto. Clearly, NPC Indonesia hopes this activity will yield many classifiers who will help develop disability sports more evenly across Indonesia. The NPC Indonesia is proud of the Mendobrak Batas programme results, which produced medals at the Asian Youth Para Games (AYPG) 2025 in Dubai, UAE. Athletes were sent to Dubai on two separate flights. Indonesia risks losing the title of overall champions at the 2026 ASEAN Para Games due to limited funding and tight preparations. The awarding of the Nararya Star Service Medal to Senny Marbun was welcomed with pride by NPC Indonesia’s disabled athletes. The cancellation occurred due to the lack of government guarantees regarding certainty of arrangements. Copyright @ 2026 Media Group - mediaindonesia. All Rights Reserved.
