Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas) Agus Andrianto, in a speech at the granting of remissions for Nyepi Day of the Saka New Year 1948/2026, stated that the meaning of Nyepi celebrations is relevant to the rehabilitation carried out in the correctional system.

He said that this meaning is contained in the theme of Nyepi Day 2026, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: One Earth, One Family”.

“The meaning contained in ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ is highly relevant to the Ministry of Imipas, where corrections no longer use the concept of retribution, but instead provide guidance by contributing to awareness of mistakes and self-improvement,” said Agus in his speech, which was read by the Director General of Corrections (Dirjenpas) of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas), Mashudi, at Cipinang Detention Centre, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Minister Agus continued that correctional inmates (WBP) are no longer viewed as a marginal group, but as family members who need guidance, support, and rehabilitation.

The improvement in the quality of services and sincerity in implementing services that are applied to the rehabilitation process for WBP, he said, is a concrete step in realising the 15 acceleration programmes of the Minister of Imipas and supporting the President’s Astacita, one of which is a weapon for the government in achieving Golden Indonesia 2045.

In line with this commitment, he continued, the government through the Ministry of Imipas, specifically through Dirjenpas, is once again giving recognition to prisoners and juvenile offenders as a tangible form of appreciation for those who have followed all stages of rehabilitation and been disciplined in renewing themselves to be better.

“The granting of remissions and sentence reductions is expected to have a positive impact on the psychology of inmates by providing an opportunity to obtain sentence reductions,” he said.

He emphasised that inmates will feel more valued and have greater motivation to undergo rehabilitation with renewed spirit.

“The remissions and sentence reductions received today are one indicator that inmates have been able to obey the rules in this place and have followed the rehabilitation programmes well,” he said.

Agus added that the granting of remissions should serve as motivation for inmates to fill their days with enthusiasm ahead of their release by producing more works and creations that are beneficial to others.

This, he continued, will support the success of inmates in interacting with society in the places where they return after release.

“To all inmates, believe that your families outside are still waiting for your change and return with pride. Make this rehabilitation period a proof that you are capable of being responsible and committed to living a better life,” said Minister Agus.

Nyepi Day remissions were granted on Wednesday, or one day before the celebration, to 1,506 prisoners and special sentence reductions (PMKP) to nine juvenile offenders.
