Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Immigration and Legal Affairs (Kemenimipas) moved 40 inmates or residents of correctional facilities from South Sumatra (Sumsel) to the super maximum-security institution Lapas Karanganyar Nusakambangan, in Cilacap Regency, Central Java.

The forty inmates originated from Lapas I Palembang were placed in six prisons: Lapas Kelas I Batu, Lapas Kelas IIA Pasir Putih, Lapas Kelas IIA Narkotika, Lapas Kelas IIA Ngaseman, Lapas Kelas IIA Gladakan, and Lapas Kelas IIA Besi.

“This relocation will continue to be carried out to realise appropriate rehabilitation and security for the inmates,” said Director General of Corrections (Dirjenpas) Mashudi in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

He said that during May 2026, a total of 88 inmates had been transferred to Nusakambangan.

Mashudi explained that the inmates transferred were in the high-risk category.

“Nusakambangan is the place where we hope to transform inmates’ behaviour into inmates who comply with the rules and participate in the rehabilitation programme effectively,” he said.

The one-star police general stated that the relocation is part of a commitment to cleanse prisons and detention centres from security and order disturbances, including eradicating drug circulation, mobile phones, and other contraband.

“We remind again to all Correctional staff: do not play fast and loose with the rules. Whether inmates or officers, if found involved—whether in narcotics, mobile phones, scamming or other violations—there is no mercy; heavy sanctions will be imposed,” Mashudi said.

The transfer of 40 inmates from Sumsel was tightly guarded by the South Sumatra Correctional Service together with Satbirmob and Ditlantas PJR Polda Sumatera Selatan. The transfer was conducted in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP).

Dirjenpas notes that to date, a total of 2,648 high-risk inmates have been transferred to Nusakambangan under the leadership of Minister of Immigration and Legal Affairs Agus Andrianto.
