Jakarta - A major fire has ravaged a densely populated residential area in Pasar Jiung village, Kemayoran Gempol Street, Kebon Kosong Subdistrict, Central Jakarta, on Monday night (1 June 2026). An estimated hundreds of homes were destroyed, forcing approximately 500 households to evacuate. Senior Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, Jakarta Central Police Chief, said the affected area was a densely populated residential zone. To combat the fire, police deployed 200 personnel from Jakarta Central Police, Polda Metro Jaya, and Brimob. The personnel not only assisted in evacuating residents but also secured salvageable valuables, provided first aid, and managed traffic diversions. ‘There are currently six victims suffering from breathing difficulties due to thick smoke, who have been taken to Hermina Kemayoran Hospital,’ he said. As of Tuesday morning, officers were still fighting the fire within the residential area. However, the flames were no longer as intense as during the initial outbreak. Reynold also noted that police had to close several main roads on Benyamin Suaeb Street and Kemayoran Gempol Street to facilitate firefighting and personnel deployment. Regarding the exact cause of the fire, police are still investigating and prioritising evacuation efforts.
