Kemayoran Fire Victims Need Not Worry, Student Exams to be Rescheduled
Students affected by a large-scale fire in the Kemayoran area, Central Jakarta, are assured that they can still participate in their examinations despite being unable to attend due to the disaster affecting their residential area. The Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Education Office, will provide assistance to the affected students to ensure their examination process continues smoothly.
A Special Staff member to the Governor of Jakarta, Nirwono Joga, stated that schools will organise follow-up examination sessions for students who could not attend due to the fire. This measure is being taken to ensure that students maintain their right to education despite facing an emergency situation caused by the blaze.
Currently, the Jakarta Provincial Government is focusing on managing the needs of the affected residents through the emergency response phase. Several regional government agencies (OPD) have been deployed to assist with the victims’ needs, ranging from setting up emergency tents to recording the residents’ requirements.
According to eyewitness accounts, the fire was first spotted around 9:00 PM WIB from one of the residents’ houses. Residents attempted to extinguish the flames using three portable fire extinguishers (APAR) belonging to the RW secretariat. However, the flames grew rapidly and could not be controlled.
The Head of the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat), Bayu Meghantara, stated that the first fire report was received by officers at 8:55 PM WIB. “The burning object was a low-rise residential building,” Bayu said in a written statement on Monday.
The flames were eventually localised by 11:30 PM WIB, nearly three hours after the initial report was received. The fire has impacted hundreds of families living in the densely populated area, and the situation is currently being managed by the local government.
