Eight residents were rushed to Hermina Hospital after experiencing breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation from a fire that engulfed a residential area in Pasar Jiung, Kebon Kosong, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta, on Monday evening (1 June 2026).

Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief, Commissioner of Police Reynold Hutagalung, initially reported six residents suffering from breathing difficulties. ‘Currently, six victims with smoke-induced breathing difficulties have been transported to Hermina Kemayoran Hospital,’ he said in a phone interview Monday night.

Heni, a resident of RW 04 Kebon Kosong, Kemayoran, said she witnessed several people being carried away by medical teams due to breathing difficulties while rescuing belongings. ‘Hopefully no casualties, as some were coughing and struggling to breathe,’ she said.

The Jakarta Pusat Fire and Rescue Sub-Division (Gulkarmat) reported in the early hours of Tuesday that the alert was received at 8:55 PM, units arrived at 9:03 PM, and the fire was contained by 11:30 PM. The burned structure was a semi-permanent residence.

Visual checks at the scene showed the flames previously visible from the evacuation area at Jusuf Hamka Field had been extinguished.

‘The fire is suspected to have originated from an electrical short circuit in a house in RT 14. A firefighter attempted to use a fire extinguisher at the RW post, but the flames were too large to be put out with the device,’ the report stated.

The fire initially broke out in a residential area along Jalan Kemayoran Gempol, Kebon Kosong Village, Kemayoran Subdistrict, Central Jakarta, on Monday night.

DKI Jakarta Fire and Rescue Department Head Bayu Meghantara said the first report was received by officers at 8:55 PM.

Upon receiving the report, firefighting units from Sector III Kemayoran immediately rushed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

To tackle the blaze, Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Division deployed 33 fire trucks.

By 12:37 AM on Tuesday (2 June 2026), a total of 165 personnel had been deployed.
