Kebon Pala in East Jakarta hit by 140 centimetres of floodwaters; RT chief says residents are still safe

The flood was triggered by heavy rainfall since Monday (18 May) afternoon through the evening. The water level continued to rise and inundated residents’ homes in the low-lying area. The water began to rise at around 04:00 WIB this morning. The cause was rainfall and floodwaters from Bogor and Depok, Sanusi explained. He said that floods in the Kebon Pala area have become a recurring occurrence in recent days. Although the flood is more than a metre high, residents are still staying in their homes. “None have evacuated yet; they remain on the second floor, still safe,” Sanusi said. Meanwhile, the East Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) continues to monitor the affected area and deploys personnel to anticipate possible rises in water levels. “This is being handled by the local kelurahan authorities together with PPSU (Penanganan Prasarana dan Sarana Umum), TRC (Tim Reaksi Cepat) BPBD, Dinas Sumber Daya Air, Satpol PP, Tagana, and Gulkarmat (Firefighting and Rescue),” said Rangga Bima Setiawan, head of the Disaster Management Task Force for East Jakarta Administrative City. He urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
