Kebon Kongok Landfill in West Lombok has resumed normal operations. Waste shipments from Mataram City, which were previously limited to one trip per day, have returned to three or four trips per day.

Mataram City Mayor Mohan Roliskana confirmed that Kebon Kongok landfill has reopened after the new landfill was declared operational. “Kebon Kongok landfill is now open,” Mohan stated on Friday (27 February 2026).

With the landfill’s operational normalcy restored, Mataram City Government is now focusing on managing several temporary waste sites (TPS) experiencing overload, including Sandubaya TPS and Bintaro TPS. Mayor Mohan said that accumulated waste already overloaded at several temporary sites will be transferred to Kebon Kongok landfill to prevent social issues in the community.

The process of relocating tens of thousands of tonnes of waste is estimated to take one to two months until the temporary sites are cleared. “The waste cannot be transferred quickly because routine collection continues. However, Mataram’s Environmental Services Department is transporting waste from there gradually until it is empty,” Mohan explained.

Despite Kebon Kongok landfill being active again, Mataram City Government continues to accelerate construction of the Kebon Talo Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Ampenan. The facility is projected as a long-term solution to Mataram City’s waste management problems.

“Hopefully it can be done in one year. We hope this TPST Kebon Talo can be completed more quickly, perhaps two years. Our need for this is very urgent. And the presence of TPST Kebon Talo will be very significant in positively affecting waste management services in Mataram,” Mohan stated.

Mohan emphasised that despite TPST Kebon Talo eventually operating, Mataram City will still need Kebon Kongok landfill to accommodate waste residue. “It will still be needed, but perhaps only for residue,” he explained.

Additionally, Mohan highlighted the limited operational vehicles for waste transport. Several fleet vehicles are damaged and ageing, while transportation demands remain high. “Our operational vehicles are limited in number, whilst mobilisation demands are high. This is something we must prepare by renewing the fleet, including three-wheeled vehicles,” he concluded.

For information, TPST Kebon Talo is scheduled to be built this year in Ampenan District. This facility was prepared to address the waste problem that had reached emergency levels following the temporary closure of Kebon Kongok landfill.

Nizar Denny Cahyadi, Head of Mataram’s Environmental Services Department, stated that the budget for TPST Kebon Talo construction has been prepared by the Ministry of Public Works. “The budget for TPST Kebon Talo is already allocated at the Ministry of Public Works. Currently we are still in the data collection stage to ensure proper planning,” Nizar said.

He disclosed that the budget for TPST physical construction reaches approximately Rp 97 billion, whilst planning costs are around Rp 4 billion. All budgets are sourced from the ministry. “Everything comes from the ministry, the ministry is doing the work. We are just preparing the land. Once completed, we will prepare operations,” he explained.

Mataram City Government has prepared approximately 80 ares of land for TPST Kebon Talo development. “Once planning is completed, we will immediately proceed with tendering,” he stated.
