KDM to promptly create stricter derivative regulations from PP Tunas to protect children in West Java
Bandung (ANTARA) - West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi stated that the provincial government will soon establish more stringent local technical regulations as derivatives of Government Regulation number 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP Tunas).
Dedi, familiarly known as KDM, said this because he fully supports the central government’s regulation that limits social media use for children under age. Moreover, this policy aligns with West Java’s existing rules prohibiting students from bringing mobile phones to school.
“West Java will create its derivatives. Children under adult age should not yet engage in social media transactions, let alone have their own accounts. Moreover, West Java has long required schoolchildren not to bring mobile phones to school,” Dedi said in Bandung, quoted on Tuesday.
According to Dedi, the emergence of this regulation is not without reason, but rather a response to current developments with the rise of the digital generation and the phenomenon of “gadget kids,” which he considers has reached a worrying stage.
However, he continued, it is very important to build a balance between the left and right brain to produce a strong generation. This also poses a challenge for parents.
“One of the current problems in Indonesian society is children. Imagine, a mother from a young age gives social media to her children. The mother chooses to keep her children quiet with their phones rather than nurturing them with her hands and heart,” he said.
“This child, if I don’t fuss every day, still sneaks using the phone. Because sometimes the caregivers give it to her. Therefore, this policy needs support and we need awareness,” he added.
It is known that PP Tunas will take effect from 28 March 2026. The regulation covers restrictions on children’s access to digital platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, Bigo Live, YouTube, TikTok, and Roblox.
Based on information from the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi), as of Tuesday, six out of eight social media platforms in the initial implementation phase of PP Tunas have stated their compliance, namely X, Bigo Live, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and the latest is TikTok. Meanwhile, Roblox and YouTube are still categorised as platforms that have not fully complied with PP Tunas provisions.
Komdigi gives a three-month deadline to other digital platforms to submit reports on the results of their self-assessment regarding the risk profiles of their products, features, and services.
