The phenomenon of residents scrambling for loose change by sweeping coins on the Sewo Bridge, at the border between Subang and Indramayu Regencies on the Pantura route, has resurfaced ahead of Eid al-Fitr. This action is deemed dangerous to the safety of drivers and holiday travellers. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, or KDM, has provided compensation to the residents.

Entering H-3 before Lebaran, the mudik flow on the Pantura Sewo Road in Karanganyar Village, Pusakajaya Subdistrict, Subang Regency, is crowded with vehicles. Amid the traffic density, several residents were seen recklessly stepping onto the road to pick up coins thrown by road users. Despite the looming risk of accidents, some residents continue the activity to earn extra income.

The sudden arrival of Governor Dedi Mulyadi at the location surprised the residents. He then invited the coin sweepers to gather at the Karanganyar Village Office to receive direct instructions. On that occasion, Dedi asked the residents to stop the activity of collecting loose change because it potentially endangers themselves and other drivers.

As a solution, Dedi offered compensation to residents who usually collect coins in the area. He promised assistance of Rp50,000 per day until 28 March. If calculated overall, residents could receive compensation up to Rp600,000, on the condition of showing identity documents.

“Now just go home, don’t collect coins anymore, later I’ll handle the compensation with the village head, each person will get Rp600,000, now let’s go home,” said Dedi Mulyadi on Wednesday (18/3).

Meanwhile, local police admit to having repeatedly disciplined the coin sweeping activity on the Pantura route. However, the high mudik flow ahead of Lebaran is often exploited by some residents to seek livelihood from road users. (H-4)

The provision of compensation is carried out to ensure the smooth flow of traffic on national and provincial routes.
