KDM Prepares Regeneration of Batik Makers and Traditional Weavers in West Java

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi (KDM) has voiced support for the Sunda Karsa Fest as a momentum to evaluate the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) while strengthening the promotion of the province’s creative products. He stated that the event, organised by Bank Indonesia and the West Java Dekranasda, aims to build public confidence that MSMEs are a crucial pillar of the regional economic system. KDM also proposed that similar events should not be centralised in Bandung but rotated across various regencies and cities to encourage creative economic growth throughout West Java.

Beyond promotion, KDM highlighted the urgent need for regeneration among traditional artisans. He warned that West Java risks losing its batik makers, weavers, carvers, and painters if skills are not passed down to the younger generation. To address this, he proposed that master craftsmen be placed on a government payroll to teach their expertise, and he initiated the concept of establishing learning centres, known as ‘Paguron’, specifically for batik, weaving, carving, and painting. KDM noted that while West Java has significant strength in woven crafts, particularly in Tasikmalaya and Garut, the number of young people pursuing these professions is steadily declining.
