The digital era has transformed the way humans manage their most valuable information. The latest research released by Kaspersky’s Market Research Centre in November 2025 shows a major shift in data storage behaviour, where the majority of people are now abandoning physical notes and fully switching to electronic formats.

This global study, involving 3,000 respondents from 15 countries including Indonesia, reveals that 84% of people choose to store sensitive data such as ID cards, financial details, and medical records digitally.

This trend is dominated by young generations (aged 18-34 years) with figures reaching 90%. In contrast, the over-55 age group still shows attachment to traditional methods, where nearly 30% of them continue to record information on paper.

Indonesian society demonstrates high enthusiasm for cloud storage technology. Unlike the global average, cloud storage usage in the country is on par with physical hardware usage.

Although digitalisation offers easy access, experts warn that every method carries risks. Physical media is prone to loss, hardware can be damaged, while cloud services risk unauthorised access if not tightly protected.

Kaspersky’s data highlights concerning security gaps: although 98% of respondents claim to have taken protective measures, as many as 36% of them still use easily memorable passwords. This makes their digital vaults highly vulnerable to brute force attacks.

Marina Titova, Vice President for Consumer Business at Kaspersky, emphasises the importance of prioritising data. “Implement backups like a workflow. Tag your files: important, critical, or low priority. Automate the essentials so you don’t get overwhelmed,” she said.

To maintain data security, here are practical recommendations from experts:
