Karo Police Arrest Fugitive in Fatal Assault Case
The newly formed Cobra Team of the Karo Police Criminal Investigation Unit has demonstrated its effectiveness. Led directly by the Head of Criminal Investigation, AKP Hizkia Siagian, the team has uncovered a case of alleged severe assault that resulted in the death of a man in Perbesi Village, Tigabinanga District, Karo Regency.
This breakthrough marks one of the most prominent cases since AKP Hizkia assumed his role as Head of Criminal Investigation at the Karo Police. Alongside the Head of Tigabinanga Sector Police, AKP Tarigan, and the General Crimes Unit Head, Ipda Indra Marbun, the Cobra Team acted swiftly to arrest a man identified by the initials EVSD (29), who had been a fugitive, on Friday, 3 July, at approximately 13:00 WIB in Perbesi Village.
The case pertains to alleged severe assault causing death, as regulated under Article 466, paragraph (3) of Law Number 1 of 2023 regarding the Criminal Code (KUHP).
The victim, JKK (57), was a resident of Perbesi Village. According to investigations, the incident began on the night of Saturday, 30 May, when the victim—who, according to family and residents, was suffering from mental health issues—went on a rampage around the village hall (losd/jambur), overturning parked motorcycles and throwing stones at residents’ houses.
During the commotion, the victim was allegedly targeted in a mob assault or physical abuse by residents, sustaining serious injuries, particularly to the head.
The victim received treatment at a local health facility before being referred to Kabanjahe Regional Hospital. However, in the early hours of Sunday, 31 May, the victim was pronounced dead.
Sensing irregularities regarding the victim’s death, the family reported the incident to the Tigabinanga Police Sector. Following the report, the Karo Police Criminal Investigation Unit’s Cobra Team and investigators conducted an intensive series of investigations, including an autopsy of the deceased. Through this investigative process, detectives successfully identified the involvement of the suspect, EVSD.
Armed with information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, the Cobra Team moved immediately to Perbesi Village and successfully apprehended the suspect without resistance. The suspect was subsequently taken to the Karo Police Headquarters for further interrogation.
During the arrest, police also secured evidence including one bamboo pole, one white t-shirt with ‘Hugo’ printed on it, one pair of sandals, and one pair of blue trousers, all of which are believed to be related to the criminal act.
