Karet–Sudirman Integration Construction Underway, Travelators Being Assembled at New Sudirman
The integration work between Karet Station and New Sudirman Station is continuing. As of October 2026, construction is taking place in the Karet Station area, while travelator components have arrived at New Sudirman Station and are currently entering the assembly phase.
This facility development is part of the effort to improve access between the Karet and New Sudymann areas, following the diversion of Jabodetabek Commuter Line passenger services from Karet Station to New Sudirman Station, which commenced on 1 September 2026. The integration works are scheduled to continue until 31 December 2026.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the work is being carried out while maintaining consideration for passenger journeys and community activities in the surrounding area.
“Construction work in the Karet area is ongoing. At the same time, the travelator equipment is already at New Sudirman and has entered the assembly stage. KAI continues to oversee every stage of the work to ensure this connecting facility can eventually support passenger access between the Karet and New Sudirman areas,” said Anne.
As part of the development, KAI is preparing one 20-metre flat travelator unit and two vertical travelator units. The improvements also include pedestrian corridors, station landscaping, drop-off areas for onward transport, and other supporting facilities in the Karet area. On the Kendal side, the work includes the addition of access escalators, canopy walkways, and pedestrian corridor arrangements.
Daily activities at New Sudirman have risen from 6,100 to 21,500. Following the service diversion on 1 September, changes in passenger travel patterns have become evident at New Sudirman. In August 2026, prior to the diversion, Jabodetabek Commuter Line activity at New Sudirman Station was recorded at 190,060 activities, averaging 6,131 per day. In September 2ly, after services from Karet were diverted to New Sudirman, activity increased to 646,411, averaging 21,547 per day. This represents an increase of approximately 251.45 per cent in daily average activity within one month.
Specifically, the average ‘gate in’ increased from approximately 3,691 passengers per day in August to 11,804 in September, while the average ‘gate out’ rose from approximately 2,440 to 9,743 per day. On weekdays, the change was even more pronounced, with average daily activity at New Sudirman rising from around 7,862 in August to 26,178 in September, an increase of about 233 per cent.
“Before the diversion, the average activity at New Sudirman was around 6,100 per day. In September, the figure exceeded 21,500 per day. On weekdays, the average even reached over 26,000 activities. This data shows that passengers are beginning to adjust their travel patterns since services were centralised at New Sudirman,” said Anne.
For comparison, Karet Station recorded 606,724 passenger activities in August 2026, averaging approximately 19,572 per day, before services were diverted in early September.
Movement at nearby stations has also increased. Activity at Sudirman Station rose from 2,304,280 activities in August to 2,474,878 in September 2026. On a daily basis, the average rose from approximately 74,332 to 82,496, a growth of about 10.98 per cent. On weekdays, average activity at Sudirman Station also increased from around 82,881 to 91,745 per day.
These figures show that growth at New Sudirman occurred alongside high travel activity in the Sudirman area, although the scale of increase at New Sudirman was significantly larger following the diversion from Karet.
Airport Commuter Line volumes at New Sudirman remain relatively stable. In August 2026, Airport Commuter Line activity at New Sudirman was recorded at 78,587, averaging approximately 2,535 per day. In September 2026, the volume was 75,654, averaging approximately 2,522 per day. Thus, the daily average for the Airport Commuter Line at New Sudirman remained relatively stable, changing by approximately 0.52 per cent lower than in August.
This condition means the large increase in New Sudirman’s activity in September was driven primarily by the Jabodetabek Commuter Line, in line with the diversion of services from Karet since 1 September.
“Passenger data serves as one of our references in observing the development of this area. The largest increase occurred in Jabodetabek Commuter Line activity, while the Airport Commuter Line service remained relatively stable. Therefore, facility improvements are being directed to meet the travel needs currently forming on the ground,” said Anne.
Before the diversion, between January and August 2026, Karet and New Sudirman stations together recorded 6,702,680 passenger activities, consisting of 4,909,334 at Karet and 1,793,346 at New Sudirman. KAI aims for the Karet–New Sudirman integration work to support passenger movement through more accessible connecting routes, while also reorganising pedestrian and onward transport access in the area.
“We want this work to result in easy-to-use access for daily activities. The progress of construction and travelator assembly continues, while we continue to evaluate passenger travel patterns during this integration period,” Anne concluded.
