PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is targeting the integration of Karet Station with BNI City Station to begin operations on 28 September 2026. This integration is being prepared as part of service improvements for the Greater Jakarta commuter line (KRL Jabodetabek) through the reorganisation of passenger flow, strengthening of operational safety, and improvement of access in the area surrounding the stations.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that the plan was prepared with a precautionary principle because Karet Station has become part of the daily activities of many passengers and the local community. “We are preparing the integration of Karet and BNI City to make passenger journeys safer and more comfortable. KAI also understands that this area thrives alongside community activities, from pedestrians, drop-off and pick-up services, traditional motorcycle taxi drivers, online motorcycle taxis, to local business operators. Therefore, the arrangement must be carried out properly, in stages, and while continuing to listen to input,” Bobby said.

In the integration plan, the Karet Station area will be directed to become a concourse or connecting space to BNI City Station. KAI is also preparing an air-conditioned travelator facility so that passenger movement towards BNI City can be done more comfortably. Passenger gate-in and gate-out activities will later be centralised at BNI City Station, while the Karet area will remain prepared as a well-organised supporting access point.

Bobby explained that this integration is driven by safety and service needs. The very close distance between Karet Station and BNI City Station affects train operation patterns. Additionally, boarding, alighting, drop-off, and pick-up activities around Karet Station need to be reorganised to be safer for passengers, road users, and the surrounding community. “We want to resolve this issue with a solution-oriented approach. Passengers need easy access, the surrounding community needs certainty of space, and train operations need a safe flow. This integration must answer all three,” Bobby said.

Based on KAI data, the Karet and BNI City area is one of the service points with high passenger activity. Throughout the first half of 2026, Karet Station recorded 7,257,442 passenger gate-in and gate-out activities, while BNI City or Sudirman Baru Station recorded 2,688,254 passenger gate-in and gate-out activities. In total, the two stations served 9,945,696 boarding and alighting activities from January to June 2026. In 2025, passenger activity at both stations was also relatively high. Karet Station served 21,956,607 boarding and alighting activities, while BNI City or Sudirman Baru Station served 7,132,683 boarding and alighting activities. In total, this area served 29,089,290 boarding and alighting activities throughout 2025.

The role of BNI City or Sudirman Baru is also increasingly important as this station is one of the service points for the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line. In the first half of 2026, the airport commuter line served 1,197,413 passengers, an increase of 12.71 per cent compared to the first half of 2025, which saw 1,062,415 passengers. With this function, the Karet–BNI City integration is being prepared to strengthen passenger flow in an area that serves commuter travel, intermodal transfers, and access to Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

According to Bobby, the data shows that the arrangement of Karet and BNI City needs to be viewed holistically as a necessity for the community’s daily travel, operational safety, and economic activity around the area. “The passenger numbers in this area are large. This means every change must be prepared carefully. KAI wants passengers to continue to easily access services, while the surrounding environment is also arranged to be neater, safer, and more comfortable,” Bobby said.

KAI will strengthen coordination with the local government and relevant stakeholders to ensure the area’s arrangement proceeds in harmony. This coordination includes the regulation of pedestrian access, drop-off and pick-up areas, the movement of traditional and online motorcycle taxis, and community activities that have been present around Karet Station. Bobby emphasised that KAI will prepare a transition period with clear information for passengers. Signage, service officers, public awareness campaigns, and passenger flow arrangements will be prepared so that changes in travel patterns can be well understood by the public.

“We do not want passengers to be confused. When the integration proceeds, information must be clear, access must be ready, and officers must be present to assist. KAI wants this change to be felt as a service improvement, not as a new burden for passengers,” Bobby said. KAI also views the integration of Karet and BNI City as part of the improvement of public transport services in the central Jakarta area. With more comfortable connecting facilities, passengers can transfer through a more organised route, protected from the weather, and with a safer flow compared to current conditions. “KAI will continue to make service improvements while continuing to listen to the voices of passengers and the community. Safety is the priority, service must get better, and the area’s arrangement needs to provide benefits for more parties,” Bobby concluded.
