Karawang to Convert Former Subsidised Housing into Temporary People's School
Karawang Regency in West Java has plans to convert a former subsidised rental housing (rusunawa) building into a temporary People’s School whilst awaiting construction of permanent facilities.
According to Karawang Regent Aep Syaepuloh, construction of the permanent People’s School is scheduled to begin in 2027 on a 7.5-hectare site currently being prepared. However, teaching activities will commence earlier by utilising the former rusunawa building as a temporary location.
The regent explained that this pragmatic solution will allow People’s School students to access regular education without waiting for permanent facilities to be completed. The district government is currently awaiting confirmation from the Ministry of Social Affairs regarding inspection results of the temporary building.
If the inspection proves satisfactory, approximately 100 students are expected to commence studies in the 2026/2027 academic year. Whilst students study in the temporary rusunawa facility, the local government will prepare the permanent site, with construction commencing in early 2027.
