Karawang Regency Strengthens Modern Waste Management Transformation through ISWMP Programme
Karawang Regency Government continues to strengthen its modern, integrated, and sustainable waste management system through the Improvement of Solid Waste Management to Support Regional and Metropolitan Cities Project (ISWMP). This commitment was affirmed during a meeting held in the Karawang Regional Secretary’s Meeting Room on Tuesday (12/5/2026). The meeting was led by Karawang Regent Aep Syaepuloh, accompanied by Regional Secretary Asep Aang Rahmatullah and Head of the Environmental Agency (DLH) of Karawang Regency Asep Suryana. The event was also attended by representatives from Bappenas, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Public Works, the World Bank, and the West Java Regional Settlement Infrastructure Agency. In the forum, the Karawang Regency Government emphasised the direction of waste management policy that no longer focuses solely on end-of-pipe handling, but rather strengthens the system comprehensively from upstream to downstream through infrastructure development, governance strengthening, regulations, and institutions. Karawang Regent Aep Syaepuloh stated that waste issues have become a major challenge faced by almost all regions, including Karawang Regency. Population growth, the development of industrial areas, trade, and settlements are seen as demanding a more modern and sustainable waste management system. “Therefore, the Karawang Regency Government is fully committed to strengthening the waste management system through collaboration with the central government and the World Bank in the ISWMP programme,” he said. Waste Processing Site Development As an implementation of the programme, the Karawang Regency Government in 2026 will develop several Integrated Waste Processing Sites (TPST), namely TPST Mekarjati with a capacity of 20 tonnes per day, TPST Cirejag of 20 tonnes per day, and optimisation of TPST Jayakerta from the existing capacity of 3 tonnes per day to 40 tonnes per day through the ISWMP programme. In addition to developing waste processing facilities, the local government is also preparing supporting infrastructure, including the construction of access roads to several TPSTs that have been included in the 2026 revised budget. “The Karawang Regency Government is ready to support the infrastructure and operational needs of several TPSTs, including the construction of access roads that have been included in the 2026 revised budget,” he said. Aep explained that the programme is expected to improve waste collection services, reduce the burden on the Final Processing Site (TPA), while encouraging waste processing into products that have utility value and economic value.
