Karawang Regency has formally launched its free mudik programme with 23 buses carrying a total of 1,197 passengers, according to Bupati (Regent) Aep Syaepuloh during the public send-off of the homecoming convoy in Karawang on Tuesday.

The regent assured that all buses deployed in the programme are roadworthy, having undergone strict inspection and pre-departure verification. Driver safety has also been verified through health and urine testing.

The programme’s popularity was evident as registration slots filled within two hours of opening, demonstrating strong public demand.

According to the regent, the free mudik programme was specifically designed to reduce accident risks, particularly among those using motorcycles for their journey home.

The initiative represents a collaboration between Karawang Regency administration, the local police authority, and the Indonesian Business Association (Apindo) Karawang, with support from various organisations providing gift packages to participants.

Kasie (Head) of Public Relations at Karawang Police, Ipda Cep Wildan, noted that this year’s Eid mudik programme features expanded routes compared to previous years. In addition to Central Java destinations, Karawang Regency has opened new routes to East Java.

“This year’s destinations are more varied, including Yogyakarta and Surabaya. However, Yogyakarta, Solo, and Purwokerto remain the most popular destinations,” he said.

Beyond transportation provision, mudik participants also received gift packages prior to departure.
