Karawang Hajj pilgrim dies in Mecca due to heart attack
A Hajj pilgrim from Karawang has died in Mecca due to a heart attack, confirmed by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) in Karawang confirmed the deceased as Prima R Nugraha, a resident of Cicinde III Hamlet, Cicinde Utara Village, Banyusari District, Karawang Regency. ‘Based on medical reports received, the deceased suffered a heart attack and passed away at the emergency department of a hospital near the Grand Mosque at 23:30 local time on Saturday,’ said Rozak, head of Karawang’s Kemenag office, when contacted on Monday (25 May). Prima R Nugraha was part of Karawang’s kloter 04. He departed for the Holy Land on Saturday night (23 May). Prior to his death, Hajj officials in Makkah reported he had received intensive care at a hospital close to the Grand Mosque. Rozak expressed deep condolences over the loss of one of Karawang’s finest sons and hoped the bereaved family finds strength and patience during this difficult time. This year’s Hajj season sees Karawang sending 1,783 pilgrims across five kloter. Infrastructure preparations for the peak Hajj phase in Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Mina (Armuzna) are being finalised. The 2026 Hajj is set to boost the national economy through the export of Nusantara spices and empowerment of MSMEs via Hajj souvenir platforms. This phenomenon coincides with millions of pilgrims from around the world gathering in the Tawaf and Sa’i areas. Hajj Service Personnel (PPIH) are ready to welcome the first wave of Indonesian Hajj pilgrims currently in Medina as they move to Mecca. The 2026 Hajj accommodation service scheme is being designed more efficiently to avoid long queues in hotel lobbies. A Hajj candidate from Riau Province, part of kloter BTH 18, was reported to have died in Mecca on Monday (25 May). Causes of death among pilgrims include systemic inflammatory response, acute myocardial infarction, acute respiratory distress syndrome, cardiogenic shock, and septic shock. The government, through Hajj officials, will ensure all pilgrims’ rights are fulfilled, including performing badal haji for the deceased. The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is directly checking accommodation readiness in the Mina tent area. Latest operational data shows 527 kloter, comprising 202,551 pilgrims and 2,098 officials, have landed in Makkah.
