Karawang Regency is reinforcing its position as a leading investment destination in West Java, particularly in the creative economy (Ekraf) subsector.

Based on data from the West Java Provincial Investment and One-Stop Integrated Services Office (DPMPTSP) for 2025 and reconciliation meetings between the heads of tourism services across West Java on 3 March 2026, Karawang recorded creative economy industry investment valued at 4.46 trillion rupiah, contributing 8.31 per cent to the total West Java creative economy industry investment of 53.3 trillion rupiah.

Abas Sudrajat, Head of the Karawang Regency Department of Tourism, Youth and Sports (Disparpora), revealed that this achievement is supported by a strong ecosystem comprising 352 companies across 117 classifications of the Indonesian Standard Business Field Classification (KBLI) for creative economy subsectors.

The highest investment achievement was reached by the applications subsector with investment valued at 3 trillion rupiah. This subsector is dominated by global technology companies and large-scale digital infrastructure such as PT. Amazon Data Services Indonesia, PT. Microsoft Operations Indonesia, PT. Datacenter Indonesia Sukses Makmur, and PT. Allage Milenial Indonesia, amongst similar companies.

Although employing only 37 workers, this sector is classified as capital-intensive industry, forming the backbone of Karawang’s future economy.

Abas Sudrajat emphasised that the presence of these technology giants represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the local community.

In contrast to the applications sector, the crafts, culinary, and fashion subsectors serve as the primary support for mass employment absorption in Karawang.

The crafts subsector ranks second with investment of 845 billion rupiah. This subsector absorbs the highest workforce at 1,639 people, driven by companies such as PT. Kobin Keramik Industri and PT. Concord Industry, amongst similar enterprises.

The culinary subsector ranks third with investment valued at 465 billion rupiah and 1,394 workers, with major investors including PT. Barry Callebaut Indonesia, PT. Agel Langgeng, and PT. Dali Foods Indonesia, amongst similar companies. The fashion subsector recorded investment of 70 billion rupiah with 206 workers absorbed, supported by companies such as PT. Chang Shin Indonesia and PT. Scenic International Trading, amongst similar enterprises.

Abas Sudrajat stated that creative economy industry investment creates a balanced ecosystem. The applications subsector provides technology, crafts and fashion provide aesthetic products, and culinary provides essential needs. If all four are managed in an integrated manner, Karawang will possess a growth engine that is not only powerful but also inclusive for all its citizens.

Additionally, Abas Sudrajat stated that the presence of application-based giant companies will serve as a “highway” for other creative economy subsectors. The presence of data centres and technology companies provides cloud and digital infrastructure needed by other subsectors (crafts, culinary, fashion and 17 other creative economy subsectors) to undertake marketing digitalisation, inventory management, and global market expansion.
