Karangasem Economic Census Reaches 68.91%, Hampered by Location and Resident Refusals
The progress of the economic census conducted by the Karangasem Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has only reached 68.91%. This achievement is the fourth highest in Bali, behind Buleleng, Tabanan, and Jembrana.
The Head of BPS Karangasem, I Ketut Mondai The End, has deployed 515 officers to carry out the census across eight sub-districts. The census has been underway since mid-June and must be completed by the end of August 2026.
“This year’s economic census sees us recording 196,866 businesses and families in Karangasem,” Mondai said during a commitment strengthening event for the economic census in Karangasem on Friday (24/7/2026).
During the field implementation of the economic census, officers encountered several obstacles. One issue was the distance to residents’ homes in remote areas, which required officers to walk long distances. Despite this, officers still visited the individuals concerned to obtain valid data.
Additionally, some residents refused to receive the officers for various reasons when the census was being conducted. Mondai assessed that the refusal occurred because the public did not fully understand the purpose of the economic census.
“Indeed, the questions asked by officers are quite numerous and some are personal, but we need this information to get a comprehensive picture of the economic conditions in Karangasem,” Mondai stated.
Given the current percentage of completion, Mondai said it is not yet possible to determine the economic conditions of the people in Karangasem. Furthermore, once the census is completed, the data must still be processed and thoroughly clarified.
“The process is still lengthy. If there are no significant obstacles, we can publish the data by the end of this year,” Mondai explained.
Mondai hopes that residents who have not yet been visited or who previously refused to be surveyed will accept the officers conducting the data collection. He also requested that all residents provide accurate and honest data. Mondai guaranteed the confidentiality of residents’ data.
Karangasem Regent I Gusti Putu Parwata (Gus Par) stated that the success of the economic census is not solely the responsibility of BPS, but a shared one. According to him, no development can be properly targeted without quality data. Quality data requires collaboration from all elements of society.
Therefore, Gus Par hopes that all regional apparatus leaders, vertical agencies, sub-district heads, village heads, and neighbourhood heads will participate in socialising the census so that the economic census in Karangasem runs smoothly and the data obtained is accurate according to field conditions.
“The economic census holds significant meaning for the development of Bali, especially Karangasem, in realising the vision of a ‘Great Karangasem’. Through this data collection, we can understand the current economic development of the community,” said Gus Par.
