Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian National Police Chief (Kapolri) Jenderal Listyo Sigit Prabowo has urged online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) and workers to help safeguard national unity and stability in response to the dynamics of a global situation that is continuing to intensify. In an assembly of ojol drivers and kamtibmas personnel in Palembang, South Sumatra, Sigit said that global conditions could potentially affect domestic affairs, so all elements of society must unite to safeguard national unity. In such circumstances, the strength of all elements of the nation is needed, including labourers and the ojol community, to remain united, not be easily provoked, and together guard the stability of the nation, he said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Sunday. He emphasised that labourers and ojol have a strategic role in safeguarding the stability of the national economy as they are the main drivers of production that underpin industrial activity and economic development. ‘Meanwhile, online motorcycle taxi drivers play a role as a link between UMKM and consumers, thereby promoting economic circulation, especially for the lower-middle sector,’ he said. For that reason, the Kapolri said the government continues to focus on improving workers’ welfare, by adjusting the 2026 UMP, strengthening the Job Loss Guarantee Program, and ensuring the benefits of occupational accident insurance can be accessed optimally. On the other hand, Sigit noted that Polri also provides access to Rumah Sakit Bhayangkara to support health services for workers and ojol. He also assured continued strengthening of the Polri Labour Desk at the Polda through to the Polres levels, so industrial and labour relations issues can be resolved quickly and accurately. ‘Thus, industrial relations and labour problems can be resolved quickly and accurately,’ he said. To protect ojol from becoming victims of crime, he has also instructed the ranks of Kapolda to prepare a panic-button app to prevent online motorcycle taxi drivers from becoming victims of theft and violence, i.e. begal. ‘I urge Kapolda to promptly prepare the panic-button app to protect and safeguard fellow ojol so they do not become victims of crime on the streets,’ he said.
