Jakarta (ANTARA) — The East Jakarta municipal government (Pemkot) has confirmed that construction of the second boxing ring beneath the Kampung Melayu flyover will begin this week.

“Regarding the construction of the second boxing ring, hopefully it will get under way this week beneath the Kampung Melayu flyover. It will later be managed by the young people,” said East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin at Cempaka Park, Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Tuesday.

The facility will serve as a sports venue, as well as an effort by the East Jakarta government to provide positive spaces for young people, channel teenage energy, and reduce the number of street brawl cases in East Jakarta.

Munjirin said the young people to be involved come from several areas around Kampung Melayu, including Kampung Melayu, Cipinang Besar Utara, Cipinang Besar Selatan, and Bali Mester.

Some of these youths were previously known to be frequently involved in brawls. According to Munjirin, their activities will become better directed if they take part in productive management through sport.

“They will be the ones managing it, but assistance will still come from the Sub-department of Sports. Those under the Pasar Rebo flyover have already come together there, filling each other’s time and building friendships, so positive things will happen for them,” Munjirin explained.

In addition, the construction of the boxing ring beneath the Kampung Melayu flyover will also be funded by PAM Jaya through support from its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

“The plan for this week is that we will work with PAM Jaya as the CSR funder. We have agreed to start in the first week of August,” Munjirin said.

He asked for the construction process to be carried out as quickly as possible, as the facility is already eagerly awaited by young people in the Kampung Melayu area.

“As for the target, I would ask for it to be as fast as possible, because the young people there are also impatient to use the venue,” he said.
