Kampung Kramat Bridge in Cipayung Subsides, Four-Wheeled Vehicles Prohibited from Crossing
JAKARTA — The Kampung Kramat bridge in Setu, Cipayung, East Jakarta has reopened for motorcycles despite portions of the roadway still experiencing subsidence.
The bridge was completely closed on Sunday, 1 March 2026. All vehicles were prohibited from crossing due to significant subsidence of the bridge deck that posed a safety hazard to road users.
Cipayung District Head Diman stated the closure had resulted in severe traffic congestion, particularly during the afternoon rush before breaking of the fast (Ramadan period). “The village head also reported yesterday that because of the closure in accordance with my instructions, the impact has been very congested at Sumir and Jalan Kampung Oyan. It is very dense, and this was raised again during the district coordination meeting,” Diman said when met at his office on Monday, 2 March 2026.
He added that the subsided section of the bridge would be sealed using steel plates for safer passage. “The gap will be covered with steel plates so that our residents coming from Bekasi can pass through but only via the motorcycle lane,” he explained.
Diman assured that steel plate installation would be completed that day to mitigate congestion during evening rush hour. “The district’s Public Works division has informed us this will be done immediately. Hopefully by this evening it will be completed and neat. Because during the evening commute, hopefully the congestion at Sumir and Kampung Oyan can be relieved,” he said.
Meanwhile, four-wheeled vehicles were being asked to find alternative routes until permanent repairs could be undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.
“Through the District Public Works office, we have already sent a letter to our colleagues in Public Works. We have written to them, but I have not yet received further information on whether the Public Works colleagues will implement this promptly,” he explained.
The bridge, which connects East Jakarta with Bekasi city, can no longer accommodate vehicles, forcing traffic to be diverted. The bridge had previously experienced subsidence on Wednesday, 25 February 2026 and had received temporary repairs. However, damage recurred only days after the repair work was completed.
The hole in the bridge deck is deep enough to prevent all types of vehicles from crossing. The road access was blocked using bamboo and yellow demarcation lines to prevent vehicle passage. Drivers from East Jakarta heading to Bekasi were forced to find alternative routes.
