KAMMI urges AMPB protest at DPR to stay within legal boundaries

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Muslim Student Action Union (KAMMI) rejects all forms of provocation and actions outside the legal corridor ahead of the planned protest by the Pati United Community Alliance (AMPB) at the DPR RI building.

KAMMI Central Board Chairman Muhammad Amri Akbar said in a statement in Jakarta on Friday that his organisation continues to respect the constitutional right of citizens to express their opinions in public.

“Criticism and aspirations are the right of every citizen. But that right must not be hijacked by confrontational narratives that could potentially spark unrest, damage state facilities, and tear apart the sense of unity that this nation has painstakingly maintained,” he said.

The statement was made in relation to the AMPB’s planned protest at the DPR RI building on Thursday (27/8).

According to Amri, KAMMI rejects all forms of manoeuvres carried out in the name of the people’s aspirations but which could potentially lead to provocation, coercive actions, or threats against state symbols.

He assessed that statements indicating an intention to hold hostage or threaten members of the DPR RI constitute a form of escalation that cannot be justified in a democracy.

Amri said a number of regions are currently also facing disasters, including communities in East Nusa Tenggara affected by earthquakes and communities in Kalimantan facing forest and land fires.

He therefore called on all elements of the nation to focus attention on humanitarian missions.

On the other hand, KAMMI affirmed that it continues to respect the constitutional right of every citizen to express opinions in public.

“Nevertheless, we firmly state our rejection of the planned demonstration to be held at the DPR RI building on 27 August 2026 by a group calling itself the Pati United Community Alliance or AMPB,” he said.

KAMMI also stated that it continues to support the anti-corruption agenda, including pushing for the passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill.

Meanwhile, AMPB is planning a protest at the DPR RI building on 27 August 2026 with a number of demands, including urging the passage of the Asset Forfeiture Bill and the application of the death penalty for corruption offenders.

A number of AMPB members have arrived in the area of the DPR/MPR RI building in Jakarta on Friday to prepare for the main protest.
