KAMMI Calls for Unity, Warns Criticism Must Not Divide the People

The Indonesian Muslim Students Action Union (KAMMI) has called on all citizens to strengthen national unity. The appeal is KAMMI’s response to the democratic situation that has been developing recently.

“KAMMI invites everyone to work together to build and strengthen national unity,” said KAMMI Chairman Amri Akbar at a press conference at a café in the Tebet area of South Jakarta on Friday (21/8/2026).

He argued that Indonesia’s independence ideals of justice, prosperity and freedom from corruption can only be realised if all elements of the nation move together within the framework of unity, rather than within regional or group divisions. They therefore called for unity among the entire public.

“To that end, the KAMMI Central Board affirms that national unity is an absolute prerequisite for the sustainability of national development. Differences of opinion and criticism of policy are healthy, but they must remain grounded in a single national spirit, not divide the people into mutually suspicious camps,” he explained.

He continued that students have a moral and intellectual responsibility to serve as an elegant bridge connecting the people’s aspirations with state administrators. In his view, student actions should not inflame the situation with confrontational narratives.

“We encourage all elements of society, including AMPB and the Arif Coalition, to channel demands for eradicating corruption, including the draft Asset Forfeiture Law and equitable law enforcement, through official forums, legislative audiences and the public participation mechanisms already available as a sign of democratic maturity,” he said.

He also noted that unity does not mean uniformity of opinion, but rather the willingness of all the nation’s children to struggle together for the same goal. He wants the public to unite for an Indonesia that is clean, sovereign and dignified, without threatening or harming one another as components of the nation.
