Kamila Andini's 'Four Seasons in Java' to Screen at TIFF 2026

A film by director and writer Kamila Andini titled ‘Empat Musim Pertiwi’ or ‘Four Seasons in Java’ will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026, scheduled to take place from 10 to 20 September in Canada. ‘Four Seasons in Java’ is included in the official selection list for the 2026 Centrepiece Programme at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, according to a press release on the festival’s official website cited on Monday. The list of films in the 2026 Centrepiece programme includes 54 works by filmmakers representing 54 countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, and Mexico. Production house Forka Films stated in a press release on Monday that ‘Four Seasons in Java’ presents a blend of psychological drama, science fiction, magical realism, and mystery. Kamila chose Mount Bromo as the film’s primary setting to showcase natural landscapes that contrast with the inner journey of the main character, Pertiwi, who feels alienated upon returning to her hometown after being imprisoned for over a decade. ‘It is a powerful metaphor for my character’s journey — a majestic nature that can feel deeply isolating,’ Kamila said. Producer Ifa Isfansyah conveyed that the production team had envisioned choosing Bromo as the setting since the early creative process of the film in 2017. ‘Bromo has been there since the beginning of this film’s creative process in 2017. Even before ’Gadis Kretek’ or ‘Yuni’,’ he said. In addition to involving domestic partners such as Miles Films, Jagartha, Trinity Optima, Imajinari, Team Up, Julie Estelle, and Navvaros, the film’s production is supported by partners from France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. The film, starring renowned actors such as Putri Marino, Arya Saloka, and Christine Hakim, is scheduled for domestic cinema release on 8 October 2026. Prior to ‘Four Seasons in Java’, Andini’s second feature film, ‘The Seen and Unseen’, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018. That film also won awards at the 2018 Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Tokyo Filmex 2018, and Berlinale Generation Kplus 2018. Subsequently, Andini’s film ‘Yuni’ won the Platform Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival 2021.
