Kaltim Methanol Industri Receives 2025 Green Leadership Award
PT Kaltim Methanol Industri or PT KMI has received the Green Leadership award at the 2025 PROPER presentation from the Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH). This award represents the highest recognition for the company’s leadership performance in environmental management and corporate social responsibility.
This success is inseparable from the leadership of the General Director, Ir. Agus Priyatno, IPU. Under his command, PT KMI has been able to carry out behavioural and business transformations towards more efficient, responsible green industrial practices, oriented towards long-term sustainable development. This success also led Ir. Agus Priyatno, IPU to receive the 2025 Green Leadership award.
PT KMI, as the only chemical industry company in Indonesia that processes natural gas into methanol, has also undertaken efforts to address extraordinary challenges such as the energy transition by providing raw materials for biodiesel, supporting national food security, reducing inequality, and alleviating poverty.
Located in the Kaltim Industrial Estate area, Bontang, East Kalimantan, PT KMI sees opportunities to utilise CO2 emissions produced by companies in the industrial zone. The company has successfully implemented Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technology to produce low carbon intensity methanol.
In addition, PT KMI has conducted feasibility studies on utilising biomethane as a raw material for biomethanol production. Both programmes demonstrate PT KMI’s commitment to utilising new renewable energy and the low-carbon energy transition towards Net Zero Emission (NZE) in Indonesia as part of solutions to global climate change issues.
The energy transition programme that has been successfully implemented internally at KMI has then been transformed to the community in Bontang City in the form of the “Life Box” Innovation (Efficient Fish Packaging with Nitrogen Cooling Utilisation). The Life Box presents an innovative solution for coastal fishermen through the provision of fish storage boxes for catches.
By utilising liquid nitrogen from industrial processes that is reprocessed, PT KMI has developed a system for making ice without electricity. Through the “Life Box”, fishermen can keep the quality of their catches fresh for longer, increase income, reduce emissions, and actively participate in preserving coastal ecosystems.
PT KMI will continue to strengthen its commitment and ongoing efforts to address extraordinary challenges, support government programmes in realising sustainable energy for a better life, and continue the transformation towards a green industry through the development and optimisation of low-carbon technology. PT KMI is also committed to expanding its contributions to society, as part of long-term responsibility in supporting sustainable development.
With a strong foundation and clear strategic direction, PT KMI, through Ir. Agus Priyatno, IPU as the recipient of the Green Leadership award, is optimistic about positioning PT KMI as a benchmark for the chemical industry in Indonesia.
