Kalla expelled from Riau college

PEKANBARU, Riau: Students at a state Islamic institute in Riau expelled vice presidential candidate Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday for being the running mate of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who has a military background.

The incident began shortly after Kalla arrived at a hall that had been set up for a campaign rally. Upon their arrival, Kalla and his entourage were blocked by dozens of students and prevented from entering the hall.

The candidate was able to enter the hall through another door, but students inside shouted at him repeatedly and demanded he leave the Sultan Syarif Kasim State Islamic Institute, prompting Kalla to walk out of the rally. -- JP
