Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, the Head of the Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas) of the Indonesian National Police, met with Bali Governor I Wayan Koster at the Bali Governor’s Office on Thursday (5 March 2026). The meeting discussed readiness for Ketupat 2026, an operation that runs close to Eid al-Fitr and Nyepi. The traffic chief said the audience was part of cross-agency coordination to ensure all community activities can proceed safely and smoothly. ‘Ketupat Operation is a humanitarian operation. It is not only in the traffic field, not only securing the mudik and balik flows, but the state is present to safeguard the community’s social momentum,’ he said.

He explained that security within Ketupat covers several key clusters: toll roads, arterial roads, ferry ports such as Gilimanuk–Ketapang. Security will also focus on places of worship and Bali’s popular tourist areas. ‘Tourist destinations are also a concern because Bali is one of the main tourist destinations for people during Lebaran holidays.’

Ketupat Operation, Nyepi and Kemala Run in Bali

The Kakorlantas also conveyed plans for the Kemala Run in Bali with the full backing of the Bali Provincial Government. ‘What is more encouraging is that Kemala Run will be held in Bali, and the Governor has given outstanding support. This will be a good collaboration to ensure the event runs smoothly,’ he said.

Kakorlantas confirmed that crossing arrangements at Gilimanuk Port have been prepared to align with Nyepi. ‘The Gilimanuk crossing is set to open and close at certain times, including the Ketapang–Gilimanuk direction. We have also received reports from the Bali Regional Police’s Traffic Directorate,’ he added. He emphasised that synergy between the police and local government is key to maintaining security and smooth activity during Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr.

‘With good collaboration, the state is present to ensure all community activities run safely and smoothly,’ he said.

Governor Koster also expressed appreciation for Kakorlantas’s visit to directly coordinate security for Bali’s major events, from Lebaran Ketupat Operation to Nyepi and Kemala Run. ‘I thank you for meeting with me to discuss several planned activities. The first is Ketupat Operation to secure traffic during the balik mudik. The second is Kemala Run, and the third is Nyepi security,’ he said. He stressed that the Bali provincial government will support the security programmes, as they relate directly to Bali’s community activities. ‘As governor, I must contribute to backing what you have planned, because this is the programme of the Chief of Police that we must succeed together,’ he added.

Koster also explained that the social media discourse about a clash between Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr is not accurate. The two events do not occur at the same time. ‘They do not actually overlap. Nyepi falls on 19 March, with Ngembak Geni on the morning of 20 March. In the afternoon, there is the night of takbir, because Eid al-Fitr is expected on 21 March. So there is no overlap,’ he said.

He noted that local authorities, along with religious leaders, have prepared a circular with all religious bodies in Bali, including the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), so that religious activities are aligned. ‘We have prepared a joint circular with all Bali’s religious bodies, particularly with MUI. So everything is clear and there is no issue,’ Koster added.

In the briefing also discussed the Kemala Run, which is expected to have around 15,000 participants. ‘The venue is very suitable and spacious, only some road access needs improvement. The Kakorlantas has invited the Head of the Road Administration to implement improvements immediately, and I will oversee this,’ he said.

On Friday (6 March 2026), Kakorlantas is scheduled to carry out the ‘Polantas Menyapa dan Melayani’ event with online motorcycle taxi community (ojek online), GP Ansor, and pecalang as a form of synergy to safeguard security and public order in Bali.
