KAI Urges Passengers to Report Sexual Harassment
To ensure the safety and comfort of all railway passengers, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Regional Division I North Sumatra, in collaboration with the Divre I Railfans Community, conducted a sexual harassment prevention socialisation campaign on the Putri Deli train route between Medan and Tanjungbalai on Sunday, 31 May. Anwar Yuli Prastyo, Head of Public Relations for KAI Regional Division I North Sumatra, stated that KAI is fully committed to creating an inclusive and safe public transport environment. As part of strict measures, KAI will blacklist offenders proven guilty of sexual crimes. “There is no place for sexual harassers on our trains. Those confirmed to have committed sexual harassment will have their NIK (national ID) permanently blocked, preventing them from using KAI services,” said Anwar. Although no sexual harassment cases have been reported in the Divre I North Sumatra region so far, KAI is taking preventive steps to minimise even the smallest potential risks. A concrete measure implemented is the Female Seat Map feature on the Access by KAI app, allowing female passengers to select seats adjacent to other women when booking tickets. Anwar also urged victims or witnesses of sexual harassment to report incidents to staff without hesitation. “Victims can report directly to staff or contact the conductor via phone or text message using the number displayed on the front and rear walls of each train,” he added. During the extended holiday period for Waisak 2570 BE and Pancasila Day, passenger numbers in North Sumatra have been dynamic. On Saturday, 30 May, 8,177 passengers used the service, while by Sunday, 31 May, 6,773 tickets had been sold for various train journeys, with numbers still fluctuating. In addition to sexual harassment prevention education on the Putri Deli train, KAI Regional Division I North Sumatra and the Railfans Community also conducted safety awareness campaigns at level crossings. The initiative targeted road users at JPL 82 in Lima Puluh Station, Batu Bara Regency, encouraging them to obey traffic signs, stop briefly before crossing, and prioritise train passage. “All these collaborative and educational efforts, both on trains and at level crossings, are tangible steps by KAI to ensure safe, comfortable, and memorable journeys for all passengers and the public,” Anwar said. Under these sanctions, offenders are prohibited from using KAI services for a specified period in accordance with company regulations.
