KAI Upgrades Dining Carriages to Enhance Passenger Comfort
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is continuing to strengthen its service quality by modernising its M1 executive dining carriages, aiming to enhance passenger comfort during long-distance journeys. The work is being carried out at the Balai Yasa Tegal maintenance facility, which plays a crucial role in the upkeep, repair, and modification of KAI’s rolling stock. Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that the upgrade of the M1 Dining Carriage is part of the company’s commitment to delivering journeys that are safe, comfortable, and memorable. She noted that long-distance train travel is increasingly associated with the overall passenger experience, from the moment of boarding to the ambience within the carriage. The dining carriage serves an important social function, providing a space where passengers can enjoy food and beverages, relax, converse, and take in the scenery. According to KAI data, 17 M1 Dining Carriages have been completed and put into operation over the past two years, with four units finished in 2024 and 13 in 2025. A further 10 units are currently undergoing technical inspections, component repairs, interior layout improvements, and safety testing at Balai Yasa Tegal, with completion expected in 2026. The modernisation includes enhanced interior design, better seating arrangements, improved lighting, and a more comfortable dining atmosphere. Anne Purba added that the upgraded carriages support KAI Services in providing food and beverage options, ensuring that service delivery aligns with the improved physical environment. She also expressed appreciation for the expertise and precision of the Balai Yasa Tegal workforce, emphasising that the project reflects KAI’s ongoing commitment to safe, comfortable, and memorable rail travel.
