Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) transported 21,563,901 tonnes of coal between January and May 2026 as part of efforts to support the smooth operation of the national logistics supply chain and sustainable energy distribution. “Specifically in May 2026, the volume of coal serviced reached 4,932,853 tonnes, indicating the high demand for the distribution of this commodity via rail,” said KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. She stated that amidst the high demand for large-scale commodity distribution, rail-based transport continues to play a crucial role in maintaining the flow of national logistics. With its large hauling capacity and scheduled operations, trains have become a reliable mode for supporting the movement of various strategic commodities. Anne said coal freight is one of KAI’s main services contributing to the smooth functioning of the national supply chain. The majority of KAI’s coal freight services operate in the southern Sumatra region, one of the national coal production centres. Through a railway network connected to industrial areas and ports, commodity distribution can proceed in a more orderly and efficient manner. The railway’s capability to handle large volumes continuously makes it a vital part of the national logistics system. In a single journey, a train can transport a significant amount of commodities, thereby supporting the smooth supply from production areas to distribution points. According to Anne, the growth of national logistics requires a transport mode with high capacity, reliability, and efficiency. Therefore, KAI continues to strengthen its freight services as part of efforts to increase the carrying capacity of the national logistics sector. “The advantage of rail transport lies in its capacity and service consistency. KAI will continue to develop its freight services to meet the growing distribution needs,” said Anne. KAI is committed to maintaining the quality of its coal transport services through operational strengthening, capacity increases, and collaboration with stakeholders. These measures are part of the company’s efforts to support the smooth distribution of strategic commodities and strengthen national logistics connectivity.
