KAI Transports 2.82 Million Long-Distance and Local Train Passengers from 11-23 March
During the Lebaran transport period from 11 to 23 March 2026, KAI served 2,378,680 long-distance train passengers and 441,494 local train passengers, totalling 2,820,174 passengers on Java and Sumatra, according to KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday. She stated that this achievement indicates continuously increasing societal mobility from day to day. She mentioned that the daily passenger volume and occupancy rate for long-distance train users continued to rise. On 22 March, 242,773 passengers were recorded with an occupancy of 150.7 per cent, increasing on 23 March to 246,987 passengers with an occupancy reaching 154.1 per cent. She explained that this condition was also influenced by travel patterns of the public undertaking homecoming trips after performing Idul Fitri prayers in their places of work, thus maintaining high travel volumes during the return flow period. Anne clarified that occupancy rates above 100 per cent are possible due to the dynamic travel patterns of passengers within a single train consist. βIn a single long-distance train journey, one seat can be used by more than one passenger on different routes. This scheme allows the number of passengers served to be greater than the number of available seats,β Anne explained.
