KAI Transported 21.56 Million Tonnes of Coal from January to May 2026, Supporting National Logistics
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Amidst the high demand for large-scale commodity distribution, rail-based transport continues to play a crucial role in maintaining the smooth flow of national logistics. With large carrying capacities and scheduled operations, trains have become a reliable mode of transport for supporting the movement of various strategic commodities.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that it served 21,563,901 tonnes of coal during the period from January to May 2026. Specifically in May 2026, the volume of coal handled reached 4,932,853 tonnes, demonstrating the high demand for commodity distribution via rail.
KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that coal transportation is one of KAI’s primary services, contributing to the stability of the national supply chain. “Coal transportation is one of KAI’s strategic services in supporting the distribution of commodities in large volumes. We continue to maintain operational reliability to ensure that shipments can proceed according to customer needs,” said Anne.
Most of KAI’s coal transport services operate in the southern Sumatra region, which is one of the nation’s primary coal production centres. Through a railway network connected to industrial areas and ports, commodity distribution can occur more regularly and efficiently.
The ability of railways to serve large volumes continuously makes them an essential part of the national logistics system. In a single journey, a train can transport significant amounts of commodities, thereby supporting the smooth supply from production areas to distribution points.
According to Anne, the growth in national logistics demand requires a mode of transport with high capacity, reliability, and efficiency. Therefore, KAI continues to strengthen its freight services as part of an effort to increase the supporting capacity of the national logistics sector.
“The advantage of rail transport lies in its capacity and service consistency. KAI will continue to develop its freight services to meet evolving distribution needs,” said Anne.
KAI is committed to maintaining the quality of its coal transport services through operational strengthening, capacity increases, and collaboration with stakeholders. These steps are part of the company’s efforts to support the smooth distribution of strategic commodities and strengthen national logistics connectivity.
