KAI: Train Operations Remain Safe Despite Mount Anak Krakatau Eruption

Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has ensured that all train travel operations remain safe and controlled following the eruption activity of Mount Anak Krakatau, which has drawn public attention.

“KAI possesses a safety management system that serves as a guideline in conducting all train travel operations,” said KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, in Jakarta on Sunday.

She stated that every condition with the potential to affect passenger travel is continuously monitored and evaluated through coordination between units and relevant authorities.

“KAI ensures that train travel continues while prioritising safety,” she said.

Anne noted that the monitoring of operational conditions, the readiness of facilities and infrastructure, and the coordination of field officers are being continuously carried out to ensure passenger journeys remain safe and comfortable.

KAI continues to monitor the latest conditions and coordinate with relevant parties, including the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) through the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the agency responsible for monitoring volcanic activity in Indonesia.

According to information from BMKG, the eruption activity of Mount Anak Krakatau on 4 September 2026 at 22:03 WIB was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 19 mm and a duration of approximately 29 seconds. As of 5 September 2026 at 10:30 WIB, BMKG reported that there has been no significant rise in sea levels due to this activity.

“Up to this point, all train journeys continue to operate according to schedule while maintaining safety aspects,” said Anne.

KAI is conducting regular evaluations of track conditions, the surrounding operational environment, and the latest information from relevant agencies.

Anne added that KAI’s preparedness is supported by safety procedures that include operational monitoring, risk mitigation, coordination between work units, and the readiness of personnel to face various travel conditions.

KAI urges the public to remain calm and refer to official information from BMKG, the Geological Agency of the Ministry of ESDM via PVMBG, and KAI’s official channels.

“We continue to ensure that train services run safely, prioritising the safety of both passengers and staff,” said Anne.
