KAI to Spend Rp 3.56 Trillion on 54 New Freight Locomotives
JAKARTA — PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is continuing the procurement of 54 CC205-class locomotives with an investment value of 222.5 million US dollars, or around Rp 3.56 trillion, to strengthen the national freight operations. Some of the locomotives are said to have arrived and are being staged for gradual preparation to support the expansion of rail-based logistics distribution capacity across operational regions. Vice President Corporate Communications at KAI, Anne Purba, said that fleet strengthening is a strategic step to maintain service reliability while underpinning growth in national mobility and freight distribution. ‘This asset investment is directed at strengthening service capacity, maintaining operational reliability, and supporting the efficiency of freight and passenger transport,’ Anne said in a formal statement on Thursday (21 May 2026). KAI regards the strengthening of rail-based logistics assets as important to support the distribution of shipping containers and strategic national commodities to be more efficient and measurable. In addition to strengthening the freight sector, KAI is also continuing the modernization of passenger service through procurement of new generation trains to improve comfort and capacity for intercity travel. According to Anne, the majority of KAI’s asset procurements involve domestic industry, thereby strengthening the national rail manufacturing ecosystem. ‘The majority of KAI’s asset procurements involve domestic industry.
