The Nusantara Explorer train will officially begin commercial operations on 28 September, with a capacity of 36 passengers per unit, according to the President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), Bobby Rasyidin.

Speaking in Jakarta during a hearing with Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Wednesday, Bobby stated that the Nusantara Explorer was developed based on an idea from the President of the Republic of Singapore, Prabowo Subianto. The initiative seeks to combine Indonesia’s natural tourism potential with local hospitality, local wisdom, and Indonesian culture through rail travel.

“We are presenting hospitality, Indonesia’s heritage, Indonesia’s beautiful nature, and heritage buildings within our stations,” he said.

Bobby explained that the Nusantara Explorer can transport 36 passengers when not coupled with Panoramic carriages. However, when attached to two Panoramic carriages, the capacity increases by 76, bringing the total number of passengers to 112.

“The Nusantara Explorer presents a new face for rail travel to enjoy the natural beauty and diversity of the Archipelago. This train carries 36 passengers without being coupled with the Panoramic cars,” he added.

He noted that during its development, the Nusantara Explorer underwent refinement stages based on feedback received after its previous use by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Nusantara Explorer is the result of interior modifications of Luxury Sleeper carriages at the Surabaya Gubeng Balai Yasa workshop. The train features several service areas with distinct characters, including Signature Class, Advance Class, Compact Class, a Lounge, a Grand Restaurant, and Kitchen & Crew areas.

Within a single trainset, the Nusantara Explorer has a capacity of up to 91 customers, consisting of 36 passengers in private cabins and a Lounge and Grand Restaurant area accommodating 55 customers.
