KAI to face lawsuit over train crash
JAKARTA: The Legal Aid Institute for Consumers and Public
Services (LBH-KLP) plans to sue state-owned railway firm PT KAI
over the June 30 train crash that killed five passengers in Pasar
Minggu, South Jakarta.
The lawsuit will be filed with the Central Jakarta District
Court on Thursday, LBH-KLP secretary Habiburokhman said, adding
that the defendants would include State Minister of State
Enterprises Sugiharto and Minister of Transportation Hatta
Radjasa, who both oversee PT KAI.
Habiburokhman said the three defendants were guilty of
violating the law over the alleged mismanagement of KAI, which
LBH-KLP blamed for the crash.
The legal aid body also demanded the immediate improvement of
the company's management system to prevent further railway
accidents.
KAI must also present a progress report on the improvement of
its management system, Habiburokhman said.
"With the lawsuit, we hope the latest train accident will not
be used as a reason to privatize KAI and that trains are
maintained as a public transportation means," he added. --Antara
