KAI to Evaluate 1,800 Level Crossings, Plans for Flyovers and Gates
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) together with the Ministry of Transportation will regulate around 1,800 level crossings in various regions of Indonesia. KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin emphasised that crossings which do not meet safety standards will definitely be closed. This step is a follow-up to the government’s directive after the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek train accident on the Gambir–Surabaya Pasar Turi route and the Cikarang-bound KRL train number PLB 5568A at Bekasi Timur Station, which resulted in numerous casualties. “For safety, there is no compromise, no tolerance. If even a small aspect of safety is disrupted, many victims will fall,” said Bobby during a press conference at Bekasi Timur Station on Wednesday (29/4/2026). “Therefore, we will check whether they meet the requirements or not. If they do not meet the requirements, we will close them,” he stressed. In addition to closures, the government will also improve safety facilities at crossings that remain in use. These efforts include the installation of automatic gates up to the construction of flyovers at high-risk points. “We have received directions from the President along with the Minister that of the 1,800 identified crossings, improvements or fulfilment of safety requirements will be carried out, either through the construction of flyovers or the installation of gate systems,” said Bobby. He added that official crossings should be equipped with adequate security systems, such as sensors and other supporting devices, not just manual barriers. Bobby also urged the public not to create illegal crossings that could endanger train travel. “One is not to create illegal crossings anymore. Because that can obstruct the driver’s visibility and is very dangerous,” he said. “If there are crossings that are already guarded and equipped with devices, do not violate them. Those that we have closed because they do not meet safety requirements, please do not open them again,” he stated. Bobby also revealed plans to close level crossings in the Ampera area of Bekasi City, following the incident that killed 16 people and injured 90 others.
