KAI to Close Unofficial Level Crossings in Tebet Area, South Jakarta
JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will close several illegal level crossings in the Tebet area, South Jakarta, for the safety of train journeys and the public.
The initial step was taken with socialisation to nearby residents through the installation of prohibition banners at several crossing points between Tebet Station and Cawang Station on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
The yellow banners read, “Danger: Train Crossing. Crossing This Railway Track is Prohibited!” in bold red lettering.
“Indeed, for the safety of train journeys and the public, the wild crossings that pose a danger will be closed by us,” said Franoto to Kompas.com via text message on Tuesday.
At least 11 points of illegal crossings have been recorded by PT KAI for closure in the near future.
The plan has begun to be socialised to residents and local gatekeepers.
One of the crossing guards, Ridho (24), said that KAI officers had provided information regarding the closure plan on Tuesday morning.
“Yes, there was socialisation earlier; they just said that some (crossings) will be closed. But I don’t know where,” said Ridho when met at one of the crossings on Jalan Tebet Timur Dalam XI on Tuesday.
According to him, the crossings guarded by residents actually help public mobility because they serve as connecting access to Kebon Baru and vice versa.
He also mentioned that PT KAI had previously added a concrete surface at the location to make it easier for vehicles to cross.
At the location, the gate is opened and closed manually using a rope by the guarding residents while monitoring train movements.
