BEKASI — PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has identified 1,864 level crossings in Indonesia that are deemed unsafe and pose a high risk to public safety.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that out of this number, the company will promptly close hundreds of points as an initial step to curb accidents at level crossings, which have long been a vulnerable spot.

“There are more than 200 crossings that we will close immediately. We have categorised 235 locations for closure as soon as possible,” Bobby said when met at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday (4/5/2026).

“Basically, those that do not meet safety requirements will be closed. Safety cannot be tolerated or compromised,” he added.

In addition to closures, KAI is continuously evaluating the security systems at railway crossings, including improvements to safety facilities and coordination with local governments and relevant agencies.

In the future, KAI hopes that closing risky crossings can be balanced with the construction of alternative infrastructure such as flyovers or underpasses, so that public mobility remains maintained without sacrificing safety.

Meanwhile, Head of the Bekasi City Transportation Department (Dishub), Zeno Bachtiar, stated that his office is still conducting a study regarding the closure of the Ampera level crossing in Duren Jaya Ward, Bekasi Timur Subdistrict, Bekasi City.

“Closing or not closing is not the target. It is just a tool. The main goal is safety, orderliness, and smoothness for both road users and train journeys,” Zeno said when met in the Bekasi Timur area on Thursday (30/4/2026).

He explained that the study is being conducted quickly, considering various aspects such as average daily traffic (LHR), road capacity, and the impact on other road sections if the crossing is closed.

Additionally, traffic engineering has been implemented at several points around Bekasi Timur Station. This policy is said to have increased vehicle speeds from 25 kilometres per hour to 35 kilometres per hour.
