KAI Targets Improvement of Safety Facilities at 1,638 Crossings
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, has officially commenced operational trials of a new crossing gate near Bekasi Timur Station. This step is intended to bolster railway journey safety while enhancing security for road users at intersections between rail tracks and highways. From 27 April to 12 May 2026, KAI, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has closed 20 crossing points and narrowed seven others across various operational areas and regional divisions. In addition to closures and narrowing, KAI is targeting gradual safety improvements at 1,638 crossing points. These efforts involve the construction of safety facilities, reinforcement of guarding, enhanced operational supervision, and cross-agency coordination. “Level crossings are points where train journeys and public mobility converge simultaneously,” stated Anne in a written statement received by Kompas.com on Wednesday (13/5/2026). Therefore, Anne emphasised that handling crossings must be done more quickly, measurably, and integrally to improve on-site safety conditions. One safety enhancement is being implemented in the Ampera area near Bekasi Timur Station. At this location, KAI has installed a new crossing gate, which is now in the refinement and operational trial phase. Furthermore, temporary security is supported by community self-reliance while awaiting the construction of guard posts and the placement of official personnel. Anne noted that field collaboration is a crucial component in maintaining safety during the facility improvement process. However, the presence of safety facilities must also be accompanied by discipline from road users when crossing these areas. “We urge the public to be more disciplined when crossing level crossings, not to force through gates, to stop briefly, look left and right, and ensure conditions are safe before proceeding,” Anne stressed.
