KAI, Surge, and Huawei Collaborate to Introduce 5G in Indonesian Railways
Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), PT Solusi Sinergi Digital Tbk (Surge), and PT Huawei Tech Investment have signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate the adoption of 5G+AI technology throughout Indonesia’s railway system. “We hope that the signing of this MoU today marks the starting point for us to make a tremendous leap forward,” said KAI CEO Bobby Rasyidin at the strategic tripartite MoU signing event held at Tanah Abang Station, Jakarta, on Wednesday. Under the MoU, the three parties will jointly explore three main areas: ICT Infrastructure Cooperation (Information and Communication Technology); 5G FRMCS Networks and Applications (Future Railway Mobile Communication System); and AI-Based Freight Wagon Detection. The ICT infrastructure cooperation will provide backbone networks, wireless coverage at stations and depots, and cloud solutions to ensure business continuity and service expansion flexibility. Furthermore, the cooperation will deliver 5G FRMCS networks to enhance railway safety, efficiency, and service quality, including a pilot project on the Rangkasbitung–Tanah Abang line for level crossing safety and intelligent train scheduling. Additionally, AI-based freight wagon detection involves applying AI-based video analysis to enable intelligent disruption detection and automatic alerts on freight trains, thereby improving turnaround efficiency and reducing manual inspections. “In the transportation industry, safety must not tolerate any compromises whatsoever,” said Bobby. On this occasion, Huawei Smart Rail Business Unit EO Raymond Zuo expressed pride in supporting KAI and Surge in this strategic initiative. “Our 5G FRMCS solutions and AI-based applications will help transform Indonesia’s railway operations, enabling real-time communication, intelligent train scheduling, and predictive maintenance,” said Raymond Zuo.
