KAI Sells 3.7 Million Tickets During the 2026 Eid al-Fitr Season
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, has recorded a surge in train ticket sales during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr transport period. As of Saturday, 21 March 2026, at 10:00 WIB, ticket sales have reached 3,799,365, or approximately 84.5% of the total capacity provided.
The total seats prepared by KAI during the homecoming period, from 11 March to 1 April 2026, amount to 4,498,696 seats, covering long-distance and local train services. With this achievement, around 699,331 seats remain available for public use during the return flow.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the high ticket sales indicate increasing public trust in rail transport for Eid travel.
“The trend of homecoming travel by train has continued to rise since mid-March. This is evident from the gradual increase in ticket sales, particularly for long-distance train services, which have become the primary choice for inter-city travel,” said Anne, quoted from a written statement on Saturday, 21 March 2026.
Anne detailed that long-distance train ticket sales have reached 3,292,121 tickets, or about 92.2% of the total capacity of 3,571,760 seats. Thus, she said, approximately 279,639 seats are still available for return travel.
Meanwhile, local train ticket sales are recorded at 438,203 tickets, or 47.3% of the total capacity of 926,936 seats. There are still 488,733 seats available for prospective passengers.
Anne added that local train ticket sales generally increase closer to the departure date, as bookings for some services only open from H-7.
During the outbound mudik period from 11 to 20 March 2026, KAI has served a total of 1,997,779 passengers. Of this number, 1,695,218 are users of long-distance trains, while the remaining 302,561 are local train passengers in Java and Sumatra regions.
The increase in passenger numbers is also reflected in the daily occupancy rates, which have continued to rise throughout the period. In the last week, she continued, the long-distance train seat occupancy rate has been recorded to exceed 100%.
Anne explained that this condition is possible because one seat can be used by more than one passenger on a single journey, depending on the route traversed.
“In a single long-distance train journey, one seat can be used by more than one customer on different relations. This scheme allows the number of customers served to be greater than the number of available seats on a single route,” said Anne.
Amid the high demand, several trains have recorded high booking levels during this year’s Eid period, including KA Airlangga, KA Joglosemarkerto, KA Sri Tanjung, KA Bengawan, KA Kahuripan, KA Rajabasa, and KA Jayakarta.
Nevertheless, Anne stated that opportunities to obtain tickets remain open, especially for return travel. The public can utilise alternative routes, different departure schedules, or connecting train services to increase their chances of securing tickets.
“With the remaining capacity, KAI invites the public to promptly plan their return travel to ensure a more comfortable, smooth, and enjoyable journey by train,” said Anne.
