KAI reports six percent passenger growth at Lubuk Pakam Station

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Regional Division I North Sumatra has recorded a positive trend at Lubuk Pakam Station, with the number of Medan–Lubuk Pakam route train users growing by six percent during the first half of 2026. KAI Divre I North Sumatra Public Relations Manager, Anwar Yuli Prastyo, stated that the number of passengers using Lubuk Pakam Station during the first semester of 2026 reached 38,592 people. This figure represents a six percent increase compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 36,243 people. “This increase reflects the increasingly vital role of Lubuk Pakam Station in serving the community’s transportation needs. Public trust continues to grow in rail services that are safe, comfortable, punctual, and affordable,” Anwar said. Anwar explained that Lubuk Pakam Station holds a strategic position in driving the region because it is located right in the centre of the Deli Serdang Regency administration. Its proximity to the Regent’s Office and the Deli Serdang Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) Office makes this station the main artery of mobility for state civil apparatus (ASN), business actors, and the general public with administrative or operational affairs in the city centre area. Beyond its geographical strategy, Lubuk Pakam Station has historical value in the development of railways in North Sumatra. The old station was built during the Dutch East Indies colonial period by the private company Deli Spoorweg Maatschappij (DSM) and officially began operations with the inauguration of the Serdang–Perbaungan line on 7 February 1890. This means the old station building is now 136 years old. Responding to the needs of the times, the face of Lubuk Pakam Station has transformed into a more modern one. In 2021, the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation constructed a new station building with the addition of far more representative facilities. This development was equipped with a canopy roof and high platforms, so that customers boarding or alighting from trains at Lubuk Pakam Station can enjoy greater comfort and assured safety. As a busy transportation hub, Lubuk Pakam Station serves a high frequency of journeys. Each day, there are 14 train schedules stopping at Lubuk Pakam Station on weekdays, increasing to 16 journeys on weekends or public holidays with the operation of the optional Sribilah Train. Various intercity and local trains are scheduled to stop at this station to serve the community, including the Putri Deli Train, Sribilah Utama Train, Sribilah Fakultatif Train, and the local Siantar Ekspres Train. “From Lubuk Pakam Station, customers have a variety of travel options and schedules for journeys to their intended cities. These choices also cover service aspects, ranging from trains with economical ticket prices to those offering greater comfort with executive class services,” Anwar said. To support the station’s strategic role as a bridge for public mobility, KAI Bandara, a subsidiary of KAI, is also strengthening the route’s connectivity by trialling the addition of four Medan–Lubuk Pakam round-trip train journeys starting 1 July 2026. “As a station that is more than a century old and located in the heart of the Deli Serdang administration, Lubuk Pakam Station continues to be encouraged to become a reliable transportation integration centre,” he said.
