KAI prepares 1.17 million seats to support school holiday transport
As the national railway operator, KAI is preparing a capacity of 1,174,624 seats for the departure period between 20 June and 5 July 2026. Anne Purba, Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, stated in Jakarta on Monday that the school holiday period is a peak time for public mobility, driven by tourism, family visits, and educational activities.
To support this demand, the government, through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transport, has introduced a 30 per cent transport discount programme for commercial economy class train journeys. This initiative is designed to provide more affordable travel options for the public while simultaneously boosting economic activity in various destination regions, including the tourism, culinary, hospitality, and MSME sectors.
Public enthusiasm for the programme has been evident since sales opened on 6 June 2026. As of 09:30 WIB on Monday, 8 June 2026, KAI recorded sales of 86,036 tickets, representing 7.32 per cent of the total capacity. This leaves 1,088,588 tickets, or 92.68 per cent of the total capacity, still available, offering passengers ample flexibility in choosing schedules and destinations.
Preliminary data indicates that routes to major tourist, educational, and economic hubs remain the primary choice for customers. The top five favourite routes include Pasarsenen–Lempuyangan, Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen, Pasarsenen–Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta–Pasarsenen, and Pasarsenen–Malang. The high demand for routes towards Yogyakarta, Solo, Malang, Kutoarjo, Blitar, and Ketapang highlights the public’s interest in visiting areas with significant cultural, educational, and economic attractions.
Regarding discounted services, the most popular trains include KA Majapahit (Malang–Pasarsenen), KA Sawunggalih (Kutoarjo–Pasarsenen), KA Progo (Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen), KA Singasari (Blitar–Pasarsenen), and KA Blambangan Ekspres (Ketapang–Pasarsenen).
Anne noted that the current sales figures present a significant opportunity for the public to utilise the discount programme, as most capacity remains available. She encouraged passengers to plan their trips early to take advantage of the discounted rates and a wider variety of travel options.
The 30 per cent discount applies to all commercial economy class trains for departures between 20 June and 5 July 2026. Tickets can be purchased through all official KAI sales channels. Terms and conditions specify that the discount is not applicable to special fares and cannot be combined with other reductions or discounts. Tickets purchased at the discounted rate are subject to standard cancellation and rescheduling regulations, and schedules can be viewed via the Access by KAI application.
KAI continues to ensure the readiness of rolling stock, infrastructure, and operational resources to meet the travel needs of the public during the school holiday period. The company hopes this stimulus will be utilised by the public to benefit the tourism and regional economies.
