KAI Orders 16 New Commuter Trains; INKA Provides Update on Delivery
PT Industri Kereta Api (Persero), known as INKA, has revealed the progress regarding the production of Electric Train (KRL) units for KAI Commuter. Out of the total order of 16 trainsets, several are currently undergoing production at INKA’s facilities.
This production process is running alongside a General Check-Up programme for several previously operational trainsets. Of the seven units undergoing inspection, two have completed all stages and have returned to service.
“The total order of KRL from KAI Commuter to INKA amounts to 16 trainsets. Of the seven trainsets undergoing a General Check-Up, two have now returned to operation,” stated Nanang Agung Rohmandiyas, Senior Manager of Corporate Communication and Representative Office at INKA, to CNBC Indonesia on Saturday (26/09/2026).
These two units did not immediately return to the tracks following their inspection; both underwent testing phases to ensure they were ready for service.
A similar process is ongoing for other units. The maintenance of five trainsets undergoing General Check-Ups is being carried out gradually according to the production stages at INKA’s facilities.
“Both units have completed the inspection and testing stages before being re-operated by KAI Commuter,” said Nanang.
In addition to the seven trainsets undergoing inspection, the production of the new order continues. Two more trainsets from the KAI Commuter order list are currently in the final stages of production in Madiun.
This development is part of an effort to meet the demand for commuter rail services amidst increasing use of mass transit. KAI previously reported that the average number of Jabodetabek KRL passengers has reached approximately 1.1 million passengers per day.
“The process for the other five trainsets is being conducted in stages. Trainsets number 8 and 9 are currently undergoing finishing at our factory in Madiun,” added Nanang.
Previously, the President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), Bobby Rasyradin, reported to the House of Representatives (DPR) that 7 trainsets of the iE305/CLI-225 type, produced by INKA, had been recalled. He disclosed this during a working meeting with Commission VI of the DPR on Wednesday (23/09/2026).
“Three weeks ago, we recalled 7 units of INKA trainsets,” said Bobby.
Bobby explained that KAI identified issues after conducting inspections, noting that certain components had the potential to disrupt the operations of the iE305/CLI-225 KRL units.
“We decided to recall them,” he stated.
