Jember, East Java - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Operational Region 9 Jember has confirmed that railway tracks are safe for travel following a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday afternoon.

According to information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred at 15:39 WIB on Tuesday, later revised to 4.8 magnitude, with its epicentre 99 kilometres southeast of Jember at a depth of 14 kilometres, located at coordinates 9.07°S and 113.82°E.

‘Upon sensing the earthquake, KAI Operational Region 9 Jember’s Operational Control Centre (Pusdalopka) immediately confirmed with all station staff from Pasuruan to Ketapang,’ said Cahyo Widiantoro, KAI Operational Region 9 Jember’s Legal and Public Relations Manager, in Jember.

As a preventive measure prioritising safety and security, all train services passing through Operational Region 9 Jember were temporarily halted for safety checks on infrastructure post-earthquake.

‘The affected trains include the Sangkuriang service between Ketapang and Bandung and the Pandanwangi service between Jember and Ketapang,’ he added.

He explained that both trains were temporarily stopped at Kalisetail Station while comprehensive checks were conducted on tracks, bridges, and other supporting infrastructure.

Infrastructure staff thoroughly inspected the tracks, bridges, and other facilities.

The operational railway lines in Operational Region 9 Jember were confirmed safe following the checks.

‘After confirmation and checks at 16:05 WIB, the entire Operational Region 9 Jember route from Pasuruan to Ketapang, including tracks and station buildings, were deemed safe with no disruption to train operations,’ he stated.

The two trains resumed service from Kalisetail Station at 16:10 WIB, with a delay of approximately 10 minutes.

Other services such as the Blambangan Express between Pasar Senen and Ketapang, the Sri Tanjung between Yogyakarta and Ketapang, and the Logawa between Purwokerto and Ketapang operated normally as scheduled post-earthquake.

KAI Operational Region 9 Jember stated that passenger safety is the top priority, with any potential disruptions, including those caused by natural disasters, always addressed through strict safety procedures in line with operational standards.

‘Passengers planning to travel by train need not worry; KAI Operational Region 9 Jember is committed to providing safe, comfortable, and secure journeys to their destinations,’ he said.
