KAI Operates 39 Stainless Steel New Generation Trainsets Across Various Routes
The transformation of railway services continues to progress alongside the increasing public demand for comfortable, safe, and modern transportation. One of the most noticeable changes for passengers is the gradual introduction of the Stainless Steel New Generation trainsets across various long-distance routes.
Since 2023, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has been executing a procurement programme for 612 Stainless Steel New Generation carriages produced by PT INKA (Persero). This programme is part of a passenger rolling stock modernisation plan set to run until 2027, with a total contract value reaching Rp5.505 trillion.
To date, 39 trainsets, comprising 391 carriages of the Stainless Steel New Generation fleet, have been handed over and are currently in operation. This figure represents the ongoing realisation of a procurement process that will continue in stages until the entire programme is completed in 2027.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that the New Generation procurement programme is a strategic step for the company to improve service quality and the passenger travel experience. “The procurement programme for 612 New Generation carriages is a long-term investment by KAI to gradually modernise passenger rolling stock. Every operating trainset brings a higher standard of comfort and is part of our continuous service development,” said Anne.
The Stainless Steel New Generation carriages feature various facilities designed to support passenger comfort, including ergonomic seats with up to 135-degree reclining capabilities, adjustable revolving seats, more spacious legroom, footrests, folding tables, USB ports, and power sockets at every seat, as well as automatic sliding doors.
For certain services, passengers can also enjoy additional amenities such as the Passenger Information Display System (PIDS), quieter cabins, toilets equipped with foot washers, prayer rooms (musala), baby care desks, and blankets for overnight journeys of specific durations.
Anne explained that the procurement and operation of the New Generation fleet have provided valuable feedback used for evaluating and refining subsequent rolling stock. “During the delivery and operation process of the New Generation sets, we have received significant input from both passengers and operational staff. This feedback serves as material for joint evaluation so that improvements can be implemented in subsequent trainsets,” Anne noted.
According to Anne, refinements are being made incrementally across various aspects related to passenger comfort, ranging from interior details and cabin configurations to supporting travel facilities and other components that influence the onboard experience.
The procurement programme for 612 carriages consists of 297 executive class carriages, 199 economy class carriages, 57 dining cars, 57 power cars, and 2 baggage cars.
This modernisation has already reached various service segments, including executive class, mixed executive-economy, and economy class. As the coverage of routes using the New Generation sets expands, more passengers will benefit from higher standards of comfort during their journeys.

Anne added that the target to complete the procurement programme by 2027 will further expand the reach of the Stainless Steel New Generation fleet across various railway routes. “Passengers today are increasingly focused on the quality of their travel experience. Therefore, KAI continues to develop its facilities sustainably. As more trainsets are received and operated until the programme is complete, more passengers will be able to enjoy journeys with New Generation comfort standards,” Anne concluded.
